Markup Validator 0.8.4 released

On Thursday 20th November 2008, the W3C Validator Developer Team has made public a new stable release version of their W3C Markup Validation service, also known as "HTML Validator". Use it online: http://validator.w3.org/ … or download it: it is Free and Open Source Software (FOSS): http://validator.w3.org/source/ The new version, 0.8.4 may sound like a very minor step from the version 0.8.3 released in August, but this new release of the W3C Markup Validator brings some very important change: in addition to checking documents against etablished standards such as HTML 4.01 and XHTML 1.0, the validator can now check documents for conformance to HTML5, thanks to the integration with the Validator.nu html5 engine. HTML5 is still work in progress and support for this next generation of the publishing language of the World Wide Web will remain experimental. The integration of the html5 engine in the validator should provide experimentation grounds for those interested in trying on authoring in this new version of HTML, as well as a feedback channel for the group working on building a stable, open standard. IEBlog tells us with its newest entry from 19th December 2007, that the unbelievable and from many web developers around the world long wished capability of the Internet Explorer on the path to web standards compliance comes true: the forthcoming and heavily in developing state being Internet Explorer 8 will pass the Acid2 test! The IE developer team, working hard on their next version of Internet Explorer, has checked in lots of code into the core rendering engine in the last couple of days, that enables IE 8 to pass the test of the WaSP.

Today sees the 13th release of the W3C Markup Validation service since, well, since the W3C started making formal releases for what was then known as the HTML Validator. online http://validator.w3.org/ documentation http://validator.w3.org/docs/ download http://validator.w3.org/source/ 0.8.2 is mostly a maintenance version, with a number of bug fixes, a big performance fix, and a few UI improvements for accessibility and usability. It is now, among other things, easier to:

revalidate a document, even in the direct input or file upload modes
use the validator with a screen reader
validate standalone SVG documents
validate a specific representation of a content-negotiated resource

These changes and more are listed in the validator's news page. You can also install and use this Markup Validator offline in a local network. For convenience use, ready-to-use binary packages for several Linux distributions like Fedora/Red Hat Linux, openSUSE Linux and Debian Linux do exist (see Source code availability for the W3C Markup Validator). Since openSUSE 10.3, the w3c-markup-validator package at version 0.8.1 is included as an official part of the openSUSE 10.3 distribution. W3C Markup Validator v0.8.1 released

Version 0.8.1 of the W3C Markup Validator, a bug fix release in the development of the validator, has been released today by the W3C Quality Assurance Team. It adresses the following issues:

Bug Fix: changed set up of parser responsible for checking XML well-formedness, which would retrieve schemas for entities each time the validator would run.
Bug Fix: the validator would incorrectly complain about HTML/XML named entities (such as ©).
Bug Fix: fixing referer checking when running with Apache and mod_perl2.
Bug Fix: the validator would crash when called from browsers with rare language preference settings
... and small performance and code cleanup fixes

Meinem eigenen Blogeintrag Scripting Media Types, Finale Folge leistend habe ich, soweit sinnvoll und möglich, bei allen Dokumenten unter sierkbornemann.de den JavaScript MIME-Typ geändert auf application/javascript, so wie es RFC 4329 vorsieht.

Der MIME-Typ text/javascript wird zwar von allen wichtigen Web-Browsern verstanden, aber er war bisher kein registrierter MIME-Typ. Dies ist nun in einem langwierigen Registrierungsprozess nachgeholt worden.

The W3C QA Group yesterday has released version 0.7.2 of its Markup Validator, a maintenance release including minor fixes as described below:

update for compatibility with new version of Config::General module
fixed the recognized root element for XHTML 1.1 plus MathML 2.0 (plus SVG)
avoid Text::Wrap error with deeply nested documents
documentation fixes (typos, broken link)
avoid trailing comma in failed validation results if number of errors is unknown
consistency fixes for character encoding selection

UK Cabinet office recommends mod_tidy: As part of a study for e-government in the European Union, the UK Cabinet office recommends automated, server-side tools, namely mod_tidy, to gain best quality web documents which are able to pass validation tests and accessibility checks:

It is likely that an explicit requirement to adhere to standards on any web content development or authoring systems, built into procurement documents, and suitably verified, would have a significant impact in driving the improvement of conformance with formal standards in these technologies.
